Social media optimization (SMO) refers to the use of social media outlets and communities to generate publicity to increase the awareness of your product. RSS feeds, bookmarking sites like Delicious, Pinterest, and StumbleUpon, and social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus+, are all examples of social media sites. SMO is similar to SEO (search engine optimization) in that the goal is to generate traffic to your website.
SMO is important to SEO because search engines are now using the recommendations from users to rank the pages in the search results page. When you “like” a page it counts as a vote for the website quality. Search engines are now putting more stock into social searches. SMO focuses on driving traffic from sources other than search engines.
Viral Marketing (word of mouth marketing)
The Six Simple Principles of Viral Marketing is a very good article written by DR. RALPH F. WILSON in 2000, updated in 2005 and again in 2012 by Web Marketing Today. “Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands, to millions.”
